W&L Volleyball Tops Shenandoah, 3-0, in ODAC Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. — The top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team used a 14-2 run in the third set to close out eighth-seeded Shenandoah, 3-0, on Wednesday at Holekamp Gym in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament.

The Generals (24-7) won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-15, but the Hornets (7-17) scored the first seven points of the third to take early control of the stanza. Shenandoah pushed its advantage to 13-4, but a combination block by senior right side Carson Allsteadt (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and junior outside hitter Maggie McSwain (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) started the 14-2 onslaught to push the Blue and White in front, 18-15.

During the spurt, senior outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) registered three kills and sophomore outside hitter Sydney Heifner (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) and senior middle blocker Katy Blain (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) each had two. The Hornets answered with a mini 3-1 run to trim the deficit to 19-18, but the Generals then claimed five of the next six points to go in front, 24-19.

Shenandoah fought off two match points, but W&L closed out the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0, on a kill by Sokolow.

Heifner led the team with 18 kills on a .300 hitting percentage. She also had six digs. Sokolow totaled 10 kills on a .381 hitting percentage to go with a team-best 14 digs.

Blain notched seven kills and two blocks. Junior setter Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) led all players with 30 assists. First-year setter Allie Buchholz (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) tallied a team-best four service aces, while McSwain added three.

Junior outside hitter Kate Poppo led Shenandoah with 11 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Jillian Warter finished with 10 kills and nine digs.

The Generals will host fourth-seeded Bridgewater on Friday in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament at Holekamp Gym. The start time will be announced on Thursday.
