ODAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
THRU WEEK PRIOR TO: APRIL 2, 2012

BASEBALL
Michael Mansfield, Lynchburg, Sophomore,
Pitcher
Mansfield, a sophomore from Richmond,
Va., made two appearances on the mound last week, starting against
Greensboro and picking up the save against Roanoke. In the
Greensboro game, he pitched seven innings while only giving up
seven hits and one earned run. He struck out seven while earning
the win. Against Roanoke, he picked up the save with an effective
performance in the ninth inning, sealing the seventh straight win
for LC. Mansfield is tied for first place for most saves (5) in the
ODAC.

BASEBALL
Richard Palase, Lynchburg, Senior,
Outfielder
Palase, a senior from Staten Island,
N.Y., helped pave the way for Lynchburg's 6-0 week as he set the
table for LC's run-producers by reaching base in 16-of-30 plate
appearances. He tallied 13 hits on the way to batting .481 for the
week, and scored at least one run in each contest towards 12 runs
for the week. He registered three doubles, one triple and one home
run with four RBI as the primary leadoff hitter for the Hornets. He
had five multi-hit games, including a 4-for-6 effort with a double,
homer, four runs scored and two runs batted in during a 12-5 win
over Roanoke. Palase is second in the ODAC in triples with four and
first in steals with 12.

GOLF
Brandon Ketron, Roanoke,
Senior
Ketron, a senior from Abingdon, Va.,
was the low medalist on the Scarlet Course in the consolation
bracket at Camp LeJeune this past weekend, which placed him as the
best-finishing ODAC competitor in the field. Ketron fired three
sub-70 rounds during the three round affair (all teams play one
round on each the Gold and Scarlet courses in the first two
rounds). He opened with a 3-under 69 on the par 72 Gold Course
(7,040 yards), and followed that with a 2-under 68 on the par 70
Scarlet Course (6,120 yards). The Maroons as a team did not
qualification as one of the top 16 teams to play in the
championship bracket for round three. Ketron still stayed hot as he
went under par for the third straight round with a 1-under 69 on
the Scarlet Course to finish with a 6-under-par 206, two shots
clear for Scarlet medalist honors.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Joey Coretti, Roanoke, Senior,
Attack
Coretti, a senior from East Grand
Rapids, Mich., led the Maroons to a pair of wins last week with 15
combined points. In a 16-5 triumph over Christopher Newport,
Coretti scored six goals and dished out one assist while collecting
a pair of ground balls. He followed that with a half-dozen more
goals and two more assists in a 21-10 ODAC win over Virginia
Wesleyan. He picked up two more grounders and forced a turnover in
the effort.

MEN'S TENNIS
Ben Nelson, Guilford, Junior, No. 6
Singles, No. 3 Doubles
Nelson, a junior from Charlotte, N.C.,
helped the Quakers to three big ODAC wins that catapulted GC to #2
in the conference with a 7-1 record, which marks the most wins for
Guilford against conference opponents in program history. Playing
out #6 singles and #3 doubles slots, Nelson went a combined 5-1 on
the week. He won both matches against Hampden-Sydney with 6-3, 6-0
and 8-4 wins. He did the same against Randolph-Macon, came back for
a 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 singles win to go with an 8-3 doubles victory.
Against Emory & Henry, Nelson and his teammate fell 8-6 in
doubles play, but he recovered for a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win in singles
play that proved to be the deciding point in the order of finish to
lock up the Quakers' school-record seventh conference win.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Zander Tallman, Washington and Lee,
Sophomore, Sprints
Tallman, a sophomore from Grand Blanc,
Mich., competed in and won four events at the Commonwealth Games
hosted by Christopher Newport on Saturday. He won the 200-meter
dash in a school-record time of 21.53, and then followed that with
a victory in the 400-meter dash in 48.86. Tallman was also a member
of the winning 4x400-meter relay team (3:23.25) and the winning
4x100-meter relay team (42.95). He is currently ranked first in the
country in the 400-dash (47.66), and this weekend's time moved him
into fifth in the country in the 200-dash.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Christina Washington, Lynchburg, Senior,
Sprints/Mid-Distance
Washington, a senior from Silver
Spring, Md., ran in three events at the Commonwealth Duals. She
finished fourth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:29.92.
Washington was a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that won the
event in a time 50.72. However, her best mark came in the 400-meter
race. Washington won the event in a time of 58.18, which set a new
ODAC seasonal top time and ranks 13th in the country.

SOFTBALL
Heather Jenkins, Bridgewater, Junior,
Pitcher
Jenkins, a junior from Locust Grove,
Va., saw her scoreless innings streak snapped this week at 33.1
innings, but the junior hurler went 2-0 to help lead the Eagles to
a 3-1 week on the diamond. Jenkins tossed a complete-game
four-hitter on Monday evening against Greensboro to help lead the
Eagles to an 8-0 victory in six. On Saturday, Jenkins retired the
first batter before allowing a run to visiting Randolph in the
first. She cruised the rest of the way to pace the Eagles in a 4-1
win. On the week, Jenkins allowed 11 hits and struck out 11 batters
to run her wins total to 11 against just one loss. The 11 wins are
second in the ODAC. She leads the league with a 0.56 earned run
average and seven shutouts.

SOFTBALL
Melanie Tenney, Lynchburg, Sophomore,
Outfielder
Tenney, a sophomore from Yorktown,
Va., hit safely in all eight games for the Hornets as Lynchburg
went 6-2 last week. She batted .522 (12-for-23) and also recorded
four walks, which helped her to nine runs scored. She had three
multi-hit games, including a 3-for-3 effort in which she scored
three times, belted a pair of doubles, drove in a run and walked.
She collected five RBI on the week and also stole a base. Tenney is
currently batting .391 with a .459 on-base percentage.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Alli Shearin, Washington and Lee, Senior,
Attack
Shearin, a senior from Essex Fells,
N.J., picks up her second weekly award of the season after helping
Washington and Lee to a 3-0 week in ODAC play. Shearin collected 15
points on the week as the Generals moved to the top of the
conference with a 5-0 league record. She picked up three goals and
two assists in a win over Sweet Briar. Later that day, Shearin
tallied four more times and helped out on one other in a triumph
over Randolph. She capped her week with three goals and two assists
in a win over Virginia Wesleyan. Shearin also grabbed a draw
control and two ground balls last week. She leads W&L with 29
points on 22 goals and seven assists.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Katy Bergey, Bridgewater, Sophomore, No.
2 Singles, No. 1 Doubles
Bergey, a sophomore from Harrisonburg,
Va., led the Bridgewater Eagles women’s tennis team to a 3-0
week on the courts by running up a perfect 6-0 combined week with
three wins in singles and doubles action. Bergey opened the week
with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number two against Lynchburg before rolling
to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Randolph. The sophomore rounded out
the week with a 6-0, 6-0 victory on Saturday at Emory & Henry.
With doubles teammate Katie Gordon at number one, Bergey picked up
an 8-4 victory against the Hornets before rolling to back-to-back
8-1 wins on Friday and Saturday against Randolph and Emory &
Henry, respectively. Bergey has now won five straight matches in
singles play and three in a row in doubles.
