ODAC Athletes of the Week | Swimming, Wrestling

FOREST, Va. --- Week 10 of the Division III season includes the first ODAC report for men's wrestling since 1980. All seven of the conference's squads were in action in the first competitions under the league's banner. Wrestling joined swimming, which continues through its early season. Basketball is slated to begin reporting next week with the first games just a day away. Those earning weekly honors for Monday, November 7, include (pictured, from left and top): Hai Siu from Averett wrestling, Kelsey James and Alex Richardson from Randolph-Macon women's and men's swimming, and Rayshawn Dixon from Ferrum wrestling.

Below are entries for all four winners from today's multi-sport release. As we wrap up the fall seasons and transition to winter sports, the schedule below will be used for report ODAC Athletes of the Week:

  • Sundays: football (thru 11/13/22)
  • Mondays: basketball (starts 11/14), swimming, wrestling (when it begins)
  • Tuesdays: indoor track & field (starts in December)

MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Alex Richardson | Randolph-Macon | Fr.
Richardson, a freshman from Vero Beach, Fla., won two individual events and placed second in a third while also helping Randolph-Macon to third in a relay in the Yellow Jackets 170-91 dual loss to Catholic University. Richardson won both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events with times of 0:54.94 and 2:01.48, respectively. His 200-fly time ranks third in the conference, while his 100-fly mark is just outside the ODAC's top-10. Richardson is one of only three athletes to compete in the 400-yard individual medley this season. He finished second with a time of 4:26.33, the best of three that have competed thus far. Richardson swam the anchor leg with teammates Ben Pastva, Aidan Campbell, and Morgan VerMeer in the 200-yard freestyle relay. They posted a time of 1:32.26.

WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Kelsey James | Randolph-Macon | Fr.
James, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., posted a pair of individual wins and helped Randolph-Macon to two second place finishes in relays in the Yellow Jackets 154-108 dual meet loss to Catholic University. James won both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes with times of 1:02.01 and 2:13.25, respectively. Her 100-back time is #5 in the ODAC while her 200-back mark is #6 in the conference. James joined her teammates to finish second in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. She swam lead-off with Emily Fritz, Tess Williams, and Katelyn Vieni in the 200-medley with the group posting a time of 1:55.25. James was the anchor on the Jackets 200-free relay with Kelsey Craighead, Caroline Russell, and Vieni joining her for a time of 1:44.59.

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK - 165 LBS. AND HEAVIER
Rayshawn Dixon | Ferrum | Jr. | 285 lbs.
Dixon, a junior from Fayetteville, N.C., is the first ODAC Wrestler of the Week from the heavier five weight classes following his victory at 285-pounds at the Mount Union Invitational. Dixon's 4-0 record include two wins by fall, a major decision victory, and a win by decision. He topped Tarez Russell from NWCA nationally 15th-ranked Ohio Northern in his first bout, pinning him at 2:58 of the match. He then followed with a 3-1 decision over Joe Yanis from SUNY Brockport. Dixon dominated Ely Reese from Gannon University with a 14-4 major decision in the semifinals. In the championship, Dixon decked second-seeded Logan Painter from ONU at 2:51 to secure the heavyweight title. Dixon's effort helped Ferrum to fifth in the team standings.

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK - 157 LBS. AND LIGHTER
Hai Siu | Averett | Sr. | 149 lbs.
Siu, a senior from Durham, N.C., made good on his first appearance for the Cougars following his transfer from Greensboro College by winning the 149-pound weight class at the Adrian College Invitational to become the first ODAC Wrestler of the Week for the five lightest weight classes. Siu won the championship with a pin over Gavin Andreoni from Campbellsville University at 6:23 of the match. That was his second straight fall after topping Gavinn Alstott from Wabash College just 1:25 into the bout. Siu won by technical fall at 18-3 over Thomas Wagner from Case Western Reserve in the quarterfinals. His first round victory over Shamique Bryant from Defiance College came via a 12-2 major decision. Siu's efforts helped Averett to second place out of 15 teams with the Cougars trailing only 2022 national runner-up Wabash.
