Emory & Henry Softball Sweeps Greensboro, 10-3 & 6-5, To Open The Season Sunday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Softball Team (2-0) earned a doubleheader sweep over Greensboro College (0-2) at home Sunday afternoon to get the 2021 season started. The Wasps took game one, 10-3, and grabbed the come-from-behind win, 6-5, in the nightcap.

Game One – Emory & Henry 10, Greensboro 3
E&H jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With a runner on third and two outs, the Wasps put together back-to-back RBI base hits from senior designated player Alex Braun (Lexington, S.C.) and freshman catcher Morgan Silvis (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) to go up 2-0. An infield single by senior third baseman Allyson Steadman (Kingsport, Tenn.) and subsequent throwing error allowed Silvis to score from second base.

In the third, Emory & Henry added a pair to take a 5-0 advantage highlighted by Silvis' single down the left field line. Greensboro responded with three unearned runs in its half of the fourth. A single to left field by Olivia Davidson capped the scoring for the Pride.

The Wasps got a run back on a solo home run by senior first baseman Kendall Varner (Bassett, Va.) in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-3 advantage. Junior centerfielder Anna Thomas (Climax, N.C.) and Braun both drove in a pair with hits to left in the sixth for the final 10-3 score.

Senior right-hander Cameron Derr (Denver, N.C.) struck out seven as she allowed three unearned runs on five hits in the complete-game victory. Greensboro's Cheyanne Cox suffered the loss, permitting six runs on eight hits in five innings of work.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 6, Greensboro 5
After two scoreless innings, the Pride posted four runs on six hits in the top of the third. Alexis Sox plated a pair with a one-out double to left field and Jordan Deaton and Ivy Ray added RBI singles of their own.

Emory & Henry responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs as Silvis tagged another RBI single to left to get things started. Steadman and sophomore catcher Dacey Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) also had run-scoring singles in the frame.

A solo home run by Sox in the top of the fifth gave Greensboro a 5-3 lead. The Wasps put their first two batters on base in the bottom of the sixth. Two batters later, Steadman drilled a three-run home run off the centerfield fence to put Emory & Henry ahead for good, 6-5.

Braun earned the victory in the circle, scattering five runs and 12 hits over her complete game while striking out three. Kassie Simmons took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out five.

Emory & Henry will remain at home on Friday when it hosts Averett University. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
