Last second goal gives RC 12-11 win

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 12 | Bridgewater 11
Records: Maroons 2-1 / 1-0 ODAC | Eagles 0-1 / 0-1 ODAC
Location: Bridgewater, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke men's lacrosse team traveled to Bridgewater to open the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) portion of their schedule. The lead would go back and forth and the game was tied with one minute to play. The Eagles appeared to score the go ahead goal but the score was disallowed. The Maroons netted the game winning goal with just 11 seconds to play to secure the ODAC win.

How it Happened:

  • The game started slowly with neither team scoring during the first 10 minutes of play. With just over four minutes remaining in the opening period of play George Gilbert took a feed from Bryson Miller to give the Maroons the lead.
  • After the Eagles tied the score, Luke Kammerman gave RC the advantage once again. However, a Bridgewater score with just :08 on the clock would see the first quarter end in a tie, 2-2.
  • At the 12:10 mark of the second frame, the Eagles would score to take their first lead of the afternoon.
  • Miller would tie the score at 3-3 and a minute and a half later, Gilbert would feed Wyatt Whitlow to put RC back in front.
  • BC would net the next two scores as the lead would be traded once again.
  • With 1:49 before the half, Whitlow tied the score. As the clock ticked down, Kammerman would make it 6-5 Roanoke with a goal in the final seconds of the first half.
  • Ethan Caldwell gave Roanoke a two-goal cushion when he scored off an assist by Gilbert just 30 seconds into the second half.
  • A two-minute stretch saw the home team score back-to-back-to-back goals to retake the lead with 11:30 left in the third quarter.
  • With three minutes left in the period, Quinn Evans scored the first of back-to-back goals as Roanoke took a 9-8 advantage into the final period of play.
  • Caldwell made it 10-8, but the Eagles cut it back to a one goal game two minutes later.
  • With 6:45 to play, Caldwell pushed the lead to two, however Bridgewater netted a pair and the score would be tied at 11-11 heading into the final minute of play.
  • Bridgewater appeared to score the go ahead goal with just seconds left to play but they were called in the crease and the turnover gave the Maroons one last chance in regulation.
  • With just 11 seconds on the clock, Luca Docking passed to Owen Curry and got it back to beat the goalie up top for the game winning score.
  • Kammerman led the offense with three goals while Evans, Whitlow, and Caldwell added two scores apiece. Gilbert handed out two of Roanoke's eight assists. In goal, Matt Federau saw 25 shots, recording 14 saves.
