UMW Men's Basketball Edged by #1 Randolph-Macon, 57-53

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 57-53 decision at top-ranked Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday night in Ashland, Va. The Eagles slip to 1-2 on the season.

After jumping out to an early lead, the Eagles fell behind, 19-10 with 13:33 remaining. The Yellow Jackets upped their margin to 27-14 with 8:33 left, but the Eagles answered to draw to within nine, before RMC responded with four straight to take a 13-point lead to halftime, at 33-20.

The Yellow Jackets ran their lead to as many as 18, before the Eagles went on a run that would draw them to striking distance in the final minute. A Riley Welch layup with 9:43 left kickstarted a 7-0 run to pull the Eagles to within 48-40 with 7:04 to play, and another run of 13-2 pulled the Eagles to within two points, at 55-53, with 50 seconds remaining, on a layup by Da'Shawn Cook. But the Jackets scored the final basket of the game, with the final score coming at 57-53. UMW outscored the hosts, 33-24, in the second half.

The Eagles received great balance, with senior guard Da'Shawn Cook scoring a team-high 12 points on 4-6 shooting from the floor, and sophomore Daniel Peterson adding 11 points and nine rebounds on 5-8 shooting. Senior guard Anias Saunders added 10 points and seven rebounds.

UMW shot 40.7% form the field (24-59), making 2-14 three point shots, and 3-5 free throws. RMC shot 38.7% (24-62), making 4-21 three point tries, and 5-9 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 41-37.

UMW will return to action on Friday nigth at the Hyatt Place Tipoff Classic, facing N.C. Wesleyan College at 7:00 p.m.
