UMW Men's Lacrosse Drops Opener to Randolph-Macon, 7-5

The University of Mary Washington men'slacrosse team dropped its 2022 season opener to Randolph-Macon College, 7-5, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground.

The Eagles jumped ahead first, with senior Kevin Cruz scoring unassisted with 11:40 left in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets scored the next three goals, extending into the second quarter, before senior J.D. Nozemack cut the deficit in half with 12:18 remaining in the second quarter. Both defenses stiffened, and the score stood at 3-2 at halftime.

Randolph-Macon scored first in the third quarter on a man-up opportunity, before senior Kristophe Newman drew the Eagles back to within one with 6:50 left in the third. The Jackets closed the frame with a pair of scores to take a 6-3 lead to the final 15 minutes.

In the fourth, the Eagles scored with 10:54 left on Nozemack's second tally of the day, and after RMC added another score with 5:32 left, junior Cameron Walker capped the scoring with 3:43 left on a Nozemack assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 35-32. UMW goalie Riley Green made nine saves in going the distance between the pipes.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when the Eagles visit Catholic University at 4:00 p.m.
