Maroons Kick Off ODAC Play With 61-45 Win in Home Opener

  • The Short Story: The Roanoke women's basketball team led by as many as 18 points lead midway through the fourth quarter before finishing off the University of Lynchburg, 61-45, in the Maroons home and ODAC opener Wednesday night. RC trailed by seven three minutes into the game but came back and had a two-point lead at halftime before holding Lynchburg to just four points in the third quarter to take a commanding lead they never gave en route to the 16-point win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead before a three-pointer by Sayre Brandstatter got the Maroons on the board with 6:19 left in the first quarter. RC pulled within one with 2:23 left in the period but the two teams traded points back and forth with Lynchburg having a 16-14 lead after 10 minutes.
  • It only took four minutes in the second quarter for the Maroons to take their first lead of the game on a Morgan Micallef layup, 19-18. A three-point play by Lynchburg put the Hornets back on top 21-19. RC responded by going on a 9-5 in the final 4:08 to take the 28-26 lead into the break.
  • A slower start to the third quarter for Lynchburg saw the Maroon defense extend a scoreless drought to 5:21 with the first points for the Hornets in the period with 5:31 left in the quarter. They scored just two more points in the quarter just 27 seconds later while RC went on a 6-0 run to take a 42-30 lead into the final period.
  • Roanoke extended their scoring streak to 12-0 after scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter. Lynchburg finally scored again at 6:44 in the fourth quarter to stop an 8:20 scoring drought. Both teams went back and forth in the final few minutes with the Maroons keeping the Hornets at bay and came away with the 61-45 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Micallef led all scorers with a game-high 15 points and was one of three Maroons to reach double-figures with Brandstatter (13) and JaBryah Haverkamp (12) also reaching the mark.
  • Madison Nereu had a game-high 12 rebounds. As a team, the Maroons outrebounded the Hornets 59-41.
  • Roanoke went 15-for-23 from the free-throw line while Lynchburg only made six.
  • The Maroons also led the Hornets in assists (14-2), points off turnovers (17-16), points in the paint (24-18), and bench points (14-13).
