UMW Softball Drops Two to #1 Va. Wesleyan on Friday

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles fell in the opener, 10-0, before dropping the second, 10-3. UMW slips to 6-12 on the season.

In the first game, the Marlins plated single runs in the first and second innings, and erupted for seven in the third. They added one in the fifth inning. The Eagles were led by Amina Shakir and Kayla Mann, who each collected singles.

Freshman Caitlyn Burch took the loss, allowing one earned run on 10 hits in three innings, with no walks and four strikeouts. Stephanie Folkner pitched two innings of two-hit relief.

In game two, the Marlins scored once in the first, but the Eagles grabbed the lead with two runs in the second. Grace Drury provided a one-out single, and scored on a double from Morgan Gilbert. Gilbert scored on a single from game two pitcher Hadlea Valera.

VWU added single runs in the third and fourth innings, and posted five in the sixth. UMW answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Drury reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a single from Caroline Bird, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Stephanie Folkner provided an RBI groundout.

Valera took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings, with one walk and one strikeout. Folkner gave up three hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Southern Virginia University for a noon doubleheader.
