Roanoke Wraps Up Three Win Weekend

The Basics
Game 1 

Score: Roanoke 9 | Adrian 7 (9 innings)
Records: Maroons 2-1 | Bulldogs 1-2
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: After earning a split of their first two games, the Maroons looked to add to the win column when they played Adrian and Ferrum on day two of the Mountain Mash Tournament. A four-run top of the ninth propelled the Maroons to a second win over Adrian College in as many days. In the tournament finale, Roanoke mounted a three-run, bottom of the seventh, rally to best the Panthers, 5-4.

How it Happened:

  • With the bases loaded in the top of the third, Makayla Austin doubled to left field to stake the Maroons to a 3-0 lead.
  • Jada Karnes added to the lead when she singled home Jordyn DiFava one inning later.
  • Four Bulldog scores in the bottom of the fourth would tie the game. Each team scored a run in the seventh as the game headed to extra innings.
  • The top of the ninth would see Roanoke explode for four runs. Brooke Trapuzzano reached and advanced on an error plating Rebecca Hensley. Karnes gave Roanoke runners on the corners with a single leading to a Rachel Sirbaugh intentional walk to load the bases. After a second out, Janae Henry delivered a bases clearing triple.
  • Adrian would close the gap with two in the bottom half, but the Maroons would record the final out on strikes to complete the 9-7 win.
  • Karnes was 2-4 at the plate and on the mound pitched all nine innings, giving up nine hits, three earned runs and eight strikeouts. Austin was 2-5 with she and Henry each driving in three.

Game 2

Score: Roanoke 5 | Ferrum 4
Records: Maroons 3-1 | Panthers 2-4
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke College looked to exact some revenge on the Panthers after falling to Ferrum yesterday afternoon. The Maroons took a 2-0 lead but four Panther runs later and it appeared as if the Maroons would once again fall to their ODAC rivals. However, a bottom of the seventh rally was capped by a two out, RBI single leading to the 5-4 win.

How it Happened:

  • Trapuzzano and Sirbaugh delivered RBI singles in the bottom of the first.
  • Individual runs in the third, fourth, fifth, an sixth gave Ferrum the lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • DiFava singled and Karnes walked to set the table for the rally. Austin doubled to left, tying the game at 4-4. After a line out, Gabby Fox hit a long drive to deep center for the game winning RBI.
  • Sirbaugh was 3-4 with Karnes going 2-3. Brianna Gerhardt came in relief of Fox and picked up the win going two innings while giving up just a pair of hits and one run.
