UMW Men's Basketball Tops Hampden-Sydney, 79-66, on Tuesday Night

Freshman guard Dorian Davis scored a career-high 24 points, while seniors Da'Shawn Cook and Greg Rowson chipped in 22 and 20 to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 79-66 win over Hampden-Sydney College on Tuesday nigth at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

After the Tigers scored the first basket, Cook connected on a pair of three pointers to give UMW a 6-2 advantage. A pair of Davis threes pushed the Eagle lead to 14-5, and the lead stood at 16-7 before HSC scored five straight to cut the margin to 16-12 with 10:40. Another Davis three with 5:33 upped the lead to double figures at 29-17. 

UMW went on an 11-4 run to close the half, punctuated by another Davis three pointer, to lead, 40-23, at halftime.

The Eagles led by as many as 19 early in the second half before the Tigers began to chip away at their deficit, using a 12-0 run to draw back to within 47-33 with 13:17 left. Rowson and Cook provided baskets to keep the Eagles' lead at double figures, and Davis hit another three with 9:41 left to put the Eagles lead at 57-39. Eight straight from HSC trimmed the score to 57-47 with 7:16 left, and HSC would draw no closer than nine in the closing minute.

Davis shot 8-13 from the floor, making 6-9 three point tries, and 2-3 free throws. Rowson scored 22 points on 7-12 shooting from the floor and 6-9 from the line, and also hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds. Cook was 7-13 from the floor with three three pointers.

Mary Washington shot 47.2% from the floor (25-53), making 11-29 three pointers and 18-27 free throws. Hampden-Sydney shot 40.7% (22-54), making 10-27 three point attempts and 12-17 free throws. HSC held a 34-31 advantage in rebounds.

The Eagles will return to action on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Johns Hopkins University.
