Maroons Remain Undefeated With 58-36 Win Over Salisbury

  • The Short Story: The Roanoke women's basketball team remains undefeated after a 58-36 win over Salisbury in the 2022 Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic at the Cregger Center on Saturday evening. Rose Sande led all scorers with 15 points while Madison Nereu led the Maroons with six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams started off going back and forth with the score tied at 7-7 with 5:32 left in the first quarter. The Seagulls went on a 7-0 run over the next 4:09 to double up the Marlins, however, Roanoke responded with their won 6-0 run to end the quarter with Salisbury having a slim 14-13 edge.
  • A Seagull jumper with just under eight minutes left in the half gave the visitors a seven-point lead at 22-17. Roanoke would begin to chip away and would take the lead on a three-pointer by Morgan Carter to give the Maroons a 27-26 lead with 2:08 left in the half. Carter's three was the first of three-straight for Roanoke with Nereu and Sande each adding their own to give the Maroons the 33-26 lead.
  • It wasn't until 8:39 in the third quarter before either team added to the scoreboard when the Seagulls pulled within five off a jumper, 33-28. Salisbury only scored on two more shots in the quarter while the Maroons began to pull away for a 20-point lead heading into the fourth quarter 52-32.
  • The fourth quarter was very quiet for both teams as the Maroons held Salisbury to only four points while scoring six of their own for the final Roanoke win at 58-36.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Maroons shot 41.2% from beyond the arc while holding the Seagulls to just 14.3%.
  • Roanoke also led Salisbury in assists (12-6), points off turnovers (27-7), second-chance points (8-4), and bench points (23-11).
  • Nine different Maroons scored in the win while 10 grabbed a rebound.

  • The Maroons will have a few days rest over Thanksgiving break before traveling to Ferrum in an ODAC contest on November 30. Game time with the Panthers is scheduled for 5 p.m.
