Eagles Edge York (N.Y) On Maloney's Late Jumper

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A jumper by Rick Maloney with six seconds left lifted Bridgewater College to an 84-83 win Saturday over York (N.Y.) College in the consolation game of the Point Plaza Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.

The Eagles led by six, 80-74, on a layup by Maloney with 2:30 left ot play, bit York scored the next six points to tie the score for the 12th and final time with 55 seconds left to play.

Bridgewater took a two-point lead on a layup by Ronnie Thomas with 47 second left, but a free throw by York's Marcel Esonwune made it a one-point game with 37 seconds remaining. Esonwune missed the second free throw, but York controlled the offensive rebound. Following a timeout, Esonune scored to give York a one-point lead, 83-82 with 12 seconds left.

Maloney then took a pass from Rashad Moore and knocked down the game-winning shot with six ticks left. York's Kevin Lausell missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Eagles picked up their second win of the season, 84-83.

Cody Griffith paced four Eagles in double figures with 18 points. Kyle Hammond scored 17 points, followed by Drew Maynard  with 13 and Moore with 11. Esonwune led York with 37 points and 12 rebounds.

The Eagles, now 2-4 on the season, return to action Thursday night when they host Randolph College in Bridgewater's ODAC opener.
