Men’s Tennis Collects Wins Over Roanoake, Waynesburg Tuesday
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team broke into the win-column with victories over Roanoke and Waynesburg Tuesday.
The Lions climb to 2-4 on the season with the wins. The Maroons drop to 0-2 overall while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-5 on the year with the results.
In the matinee match, Eastern Nazarene rolled past Roanoke 8-1.
The Lions established a 3-0 lead with three victories in doubles play.
Laurent Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) downed Jack Doriss and Jack Fishwick 8-5 at the top doubles spot.
Sven Grunenwald (Winden, Germany) and Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) blanked Hunter Adams and Grayson White 8-0 at the No. 2 position.
Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) and Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) topped Thomas Hodges and Michael Morrell at the third slot, 8-3.
Eastern Nazarene notched five singles wins to secure its first-ever victory over the Maroons.
Siercke defeated Fishwick 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 position while Escobar cruised past Doriss at the third spot 6-0, 6-1.
Rodriguez claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fourth slot over Hodges. Carlos Gomez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) breezed by Morrel 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth singles match. Baldo Karinja (Zadar, Croatia) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Adams at the No. 6 position in his collegiate debut.
Roanoke's lone win came at the No. 2 singles spot as White downed Ruttkowski 7-5, 6-0.
In the nightcap, Eastern Nazarene swept Waynesburg 9-0 in the first-ever matchup.
Ruttkowski and Siercke coasted past Conor Cassidy and Joey English 8-1 at the No. 1 doubles position.
Rodriguez and Grunenwald posted an 8-2 win at the second spot over Tanner McKnight and Frank Sullivan.
Escobar and Pierson blanked Keaton Moorehead and Trevor Kotchman 8-0 at the No. 3 slot.
Siercke notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory over English at the top singles spot while Escobar rolled past Cassidy 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.
Gomez registered a 6-0, 6-0 victory over McKnight in his first match at the No. 3 singles spot and Pierson defeated Sullivan 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot.
Grunenwald and Karinja cruised to straight-set wins at the fifth and sixth singles positions, respectively.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene is slated to take on NAIA's Spring Arbor March 4.
