Volleyball Splits Matches at Averett Classic going 2-2

NCWC 3, GUILFORD 1

DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball Team defeated the Quakers of Guilford College 3-1 before falling 0-3 to Shenandoah University's Hornets in the Averett Cougar Classic on Saturday.

The Bishops won the first two sets against Guilford 25-18 and 25-22 before falling in the third 18-25. A close fourth set win of 25-22 clenched the match. 

Senior middle hitter Sydney Barnwell led the Bishops with 13 kills, 6 block assists, and 2 aces to hit a .444. Lauren Weaver tallied 11 kills to hit a .262 in the middle, earning 1 solo block and 2 block assists. 

Junior libero Kira Kristjanson led with 15 digs, while Junior Aubrey Nicholson totaled 11 digs. Sophomore setter Sloan Martin contributed 40 assists, allowing the Bishops to outhit the Quakers .236 to .187. 

Weaver was also named to the All-Tournament Team of the Averett Classic.  

Shenandoah 3, NCWC 0

The Bishops fell to ODAC opponent Shenandoah University 0-3 Saturday afternoon, 23-25, 22-25, and 15-25. 

Barnwell led the Bishops again with 9 kills on 20 attempts, hitting .300 with 1 block assist. Weaver was not far behind, hitting a .250 with 7 kills on 16 attempts and a solo block. 

Kristjanson led the defense with 12 digs and 4 aces. Senior Michaela Seawell followed with 8 digs and 4 aces, and Nicholson with 7 digs. 

Setter Sloan Martin tallied 15 assists, enabling 28 kills for the Bishops. This offense fell short, as the Hornets of Shenandoah managed to hit a .243.

The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball Team finished 2-2 this weekend, bringing their record to 3-2 overall in a five-match week. The Bishops return to Virginia next weekend for four matches in Roanoke College's Maroon Classic.
