Pruden Shines in St. Mary's Women's Basketball Loss to Virginia Wesleyan

St. Mary's City, Md. – First-year forward Sophie Pruden (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) recorded her first collegiate double-double as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team suffered a 74-59 setback to Virginia Wesleyan College in the championship game of the Cherry Cove Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.

Pruden notched team-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds in 29 minutes of action off the bench while sophomore guard Jasmine Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) earned All-Tournament honors after tallying 24 points, seven assists, six steals and four assists in two games for the Seahawks (1-2).

Haverford College finished third in the tournament with a dominating 67-33 victory over Arcadia University (2-2) earlier in the day in the consolation game. Dominique Meeks paced Haverford (2-1) in the win with 11 points and 12 rebounds en route to All-Tournament honors.

Sophomore guard Pui Sham (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), who finished the afternoon with 11 points, gave the Seahawks their only lead of the game at 10:58 with her first three-pointer of the contest.  Junior guard Jocelyn Spencer (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) sparked a 13-5 Virginia Wesleyan run to give the visitors a 21-14 advantage with 6:23 remaining in the first half.

Pruden connected on two free throws with six seconds on the clock to cap a 15-8 run and send the Seahawks into the locker room tied 29-29 with Virginia Wesleyan at halftime.

After missing five three-point attempts in the first half, the Marlins (2-0) went 5-of-10 from downtown in the second half to break open the 29-29 draw and boast a double-digit margin for the final 14 minutes of the game.  Senior guard Kristina Jameson (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) started the scoring for VWC with her first of three long-range shots at 19:17 while first-year guard Symonne Newsome (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) capped the 22-6 run with a three-point play of her own.

Junior guard Shawnee Lewis (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) paced the Marlins with game-high 17 points and six rebounds while Jameson finished with 13, Newsome added 11 and first-year guard Katie Tassa (Bristow, Va./Manassas Osbourn Park) had 10 off the bench.

St. Mary's returns to action Tuesday, November 23 when the Seahawks welcome Trinity (D.C.) University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for non-conference action at 7:00 pm.
