Emory & Henry Football Defeats Ferrum, 41-23, In Crooked Road Classic Saturday To End The Season

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Football Team (6-4) completed its season with a strong performance, defeating long-time rival Ferrum College (6-4) by a 41-23 score. The Wasps retain the Crooked Road Classic trophy with their fourth-straight win in the series and will hold it for the foreseeable future as a full NCAA Division II schedule is projected for the 2022 season.

How It Happened
   Emory & Henry took the opening kickoff and went down the field for a 37-yard catch-and-run by sophomore wide receiver Jermawn Ford (District Heights, Md.) from sophomore quarterback Kyle Short (Lebanon, Ohio). Ferrum answered just 1:03 later with a 35-yard field goal by Seth Deaton.
   The squads traded touchdowns on their next drives as Ford hauled in another reception, this time a 15-yarder while Josh Ellerbe scored on a one-yard run for FC to make it a 13-10 score.
   The Wasps capped the quarter as senior running back Devontae Jordan (Bassett, Va.) plunged in from two yards out for a 20-10 advantage.
   It appeared that the second quarter would go scoreless, but E&H junior kicker Cameron Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.) hit a 31-yard field goal as time expired for a 23-10 halftime lead.
   On the first drive of the third quarter, Ferrum closed the gap to 23-17 on a 53-yard reception by Ellerbe from Titus Jones. The rest of the frame was all Wasps as senior wide receiver Kashawn Cosey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) caught a seven-yard pass from Short, Jordan ran in from eight yards out and Jones connected on a 25-yard field goal to make the score 41-17.
   Ferrum capped the scoring with 5:48 to go in the contest as Deven Gray hauled in a 10-yard receptions from Jones but the deficit was too much to overcome as Emory & Henry captured the win, 41-23.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
   Jordan had 36 carries for 183 yards and two touchdowns while Short went 16-for-32 through the air for 235 yards and three scores despite a pair of interceptions.
   Ford led the way with five catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns while Cosey racked up 65 total yards with four catches for 40 yards and a run for 25.
   Senior linebacker Brent Butler (Roanoke, Va.) made 11 tackles to pace the Wasps' defense while 5th-year defensive lineman Deondre Chambliss (Chattanooga, Tenn.) had nine stops including two sacks for 17 yards and two quarterback hurries. Senior defensive lineman Donovan Pinnix (Eden, N.C.) made nine tackles as senior defensive back T.J. Tester (Moneta, Va.) notched a pair of sacks and a forced fumble and senior defensive back Zyquis Law (Charlotte, N.C.) picked off a pass.

Ferrum Individual Leaders
   Jones was 14-for-30 passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns, hitting nine different receivers during the game. Ellerbe rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown while catching four passes for 74 yard and another score.
   Tmahdae Penn had four grabs for 61 yards while Gray went for 13 yards and a touchdown on two catches.
   Billy Higgins made 11 tackles while Drew Hill notched nine stops including a quarterback sack. Ray'quan Payne and Avion Smith each had interceptions in the contest.

A Deeper Look
   Emory & Henry posted 452 yards of total offense, rushing for 217 and passing for 235. The Wasps had 29 first downs on the day while the Panthers managed just 260 yards of offense, moving the chains just 14 times.
   E&H held the ball for nearly 36 minutes and had a third-down efficiency of 46.5 percent (6-for-13) compared to 25 percent (4-for-16) for FC.
   Both squads were hampered by penalties being penalized nine times each for a total of 220 yards.
