Ruth double-double helps E-town past Randolph-Macon

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Mikayla Ruth recorded her first career double-double alongside Emily Martin's eighth double-double of the season and the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team held off Randolph-Macon Friday evening at Thompson Gymnasium, 50-41. The win extended the team's home win streak to six on the season.

Randolph-Macon (5-4) was up 5-2 early after a three-pointer by Taylor Intermill, but a 9-0 run from Elizabethtown (9-1) had the Jays in front for the first time. Ruth provided five of the nine during the spurt with a jumper and an and-one, completed with the made free throw. Abby Beyer's free throws made it 11-5 with 3:27 left in the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets held E-town scoreless the remainder of the quarter after Beyer's foul shots, but could only shrink the deficit to a bucket and trailed 11-9 going into the second.

RMC retook the lead midway through the second on Amber Lee's layup, 16-15, but Beyer's trey from the left corner erased the advantage and gave it back to the Blue Jays. Ruth sank her second three-pointer of the season on the following possession.

Ruth and Lydia Lawson helped extend the lead to its largest, eight points, with 1:06 left in the first half and forced the Yellow Jackets into a timeout.

The Jays threatened to pull away in the third after Nikki Thompson found Lydia Lawson on a backdoor cut with 6:54 left in the third to make it 28-19.

After Randolph-Macon got back within two possession, Emma Hoesman came through with two big shots to push it back to 11. Her first make came on a driving layup before hitting a three two possession later.

The lead got to as many as 12, but by the start of the fourth, it was only seven as RMC continued to hang around.

E-town maintained its distance on the scoreboard, but five different times the Yellow Jackets got within five points. The Jays were able to ice the game away at the foul line in the final minutes of the game at the hands of Martin and Lawson.

Kareema Conteh split a pair of foul shots with 51 seconds left, and those would be the final points of the night for RMC as Elizabethtown held on 50-41.

The Jays held Randolph-Macon to 25 percent shooting, the third opponent to shoot 25 percent of lower against E-town.

Martin's 15 led the way, while Ruth posted 13 points and 12 rebounds, both career-highs. She also led the team with five made baskets. Lawson and Hoesman each added six apiece.

The women's basketball team has a quick turnaround as Cabrini comes to Thompson Gymnasium for the final game of 2016 tomorrow, December 31. Tomorrow's game tips off at 2 p.m.
