HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The Hampden-Sydney College Tigers overwhelmed Virginia Wise in the second-half to take the Roundball Club Tip Off Tournament Championship 90-77 on Saturday afternoon. Farmingdale State defeated Methodist 89-82. Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) was named the Tournament MVP as he averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 66.7% (20/30). Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) and Ru White (Chesterfield, VA/L.C. Bird) were named to the All-Tournament team. Jessee averaged 13.5 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds with 50% shooting overall and 41.7% from three. White chipped in with 11.0 points (56.3% shooting) with 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals. In a foul plagued contest with a combined 55 infractions, the game proved to be a tight contest early on. UVA Wise started out on fire from the field, draining their first three trifectas and their first six shots to take a 16-9 lead at the 14:47 mark. The Tigers defense buckled down from there and used a 13-4 run to take a 22-20 lead with 10:06 left before intermission. The game continued to be back and forth with the game tied at 30-30 with 4:31 remaining. However, a George rebound and outlet pass to White led to a thunderous fast break jam that ignited the team and helped send the Tigers into halftime with a 39-36 lead. Points off turnovers and free throws proved to be the difference maker in the opening stanza. UVAW had 18 points off 14 H-SC turnovers, but they only converted on nine of their 17 attempts at the charity stripe.
Hampden-Sydney came out of the locker room fired up to open the second half as a Jessee three pointer and a White layup gave them a 44-36 advantage just 28 seconds into the half. With 15:51 to go in the game, the Cavaliers trailed by just four points, but the backbreaking play that would begin the game deciding run occurred when George picked the pocket of Darius Smith and ran down the court for a monstrous jam. Smith was then whistled for a technical foul and two Jack Sumner (Gastonia, NC/Forestview) free throws gave the Tigers a 10 point edge with 13:21 left.
At the 11:58 mark, Khobi Williamson (Norfolk, VA/Maury) rejected Travis Berry's layup, igniting a George coast-to-coast fast break throw down. Just one minute later, a White alley oop pass to Williamson connected as Williamson brought down the thunder. Finishing out the run was a Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) layup at the 10:19 mark to give the Tigers a 68-46 lead. In just 5:32 of playing time, H-SC went on a 20-2 run that turned a competitive game into a blowout. O'Neill would get in on the dunk show as White tossed up another alley oop pass as O'Neill came off a backscreen and slammed it home to make it a 70-50 contest.
The Cavaliers continued to battle and cut the lead to 12, 75-63, with 5:49 to go, but Hampden-Sydney pushed the lead back out to 20, 87-67 at the 3:07 mark as the starters began heading to the bench.
George posted game highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds as he shot 12-16 overall, 2-5 from three, and 2-3 from the foul line in 30 minutes of action. White posted an all-around line of 14 points (6-11 FGs), five rebounds, and four assists. Jessee contributed 15 points, making 5-of-9 shots and 3-of-6 three pointers. O'Neill added 11 points, Williamson tacked on nine points and four boards, and Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall) tallied nine assists. Kevin Perry led UVA Wise with 18 points and five boards, and Jermaine Wright added on 11 points. Travis Berry contributed 10 points and Norris Gaskins had eight points and six caroms.
