Six-Run Fourth Leads UMW Baseball Past Bridgewater, 7-4

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit in defeating Bridgewater College, 7-4, on Tuesday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 11-6 on the season.

Bridgewater opened the scoring with a run in the first, but UMW answered with one in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore right fielder Noah Roots was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single from Owen Reilly, and scored on a single from sophomore DH Ty Lowe.

Bridgewater went back on top with run in the top of the fourth, setting the stage for UMW's big inning. Sophomore center fielder Bobby Ayscue ripped a two-run double, and Lowe followed with a two-run double after the Eagles re-loaded the bases. Reilly scored on a single to shortstop by Jonathan Sedmak, and Alex Purgason added an RBI single to cap the scoring. Bridgewater scored single runs in the sixth and eighth, but sophomore Ryan Dudak closed the game with a clean ninth, inducing a strikeout and double play.

Lowe led UMW with two singles, a double, and three RBI, while Burke Steifman added a pair of hits.

Sophomore lefty Brendan McComber picked up his third win, scattering nine hits in seven innings on two earned runs, with two walks and five strikeouts. Dudak picked up his second save.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles visit Hampden-Sydney College at 3:00 p.m.
