The Short Story: The Roanoke College field hockey team scored early and often to win its fourth-straight game by way of shutout with an 8-0 victory on the road over Meredith College. The win against the Avenging Angels marks the first time since the 2000 season that the Maroons have won four in-a-row by way of shutout. In 2000, Roanoke started off the season with five -straight wins by shutout. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Katherine Seal got things started for Roanoke with, what would be the game-winner, a goal just over three minutes into the game off a double pass from Hope Keller and Viktoria Warweg.
• Martha Hurley gave the Maroons a 2-0 lead at 5:47 in the game with a goal assisted by Lindsey Keyes.
• Keller closed out scoring in the first quarter with an unassisted goal to give Roanoke the 3-0 advantage.
• The Maroons added four more goals in the second quarter starting with an unassisted one by Clare McCurley at 21:10.
• Saige Bullock (24:04 – from Abby McCusker), Brooke Smith (26:24 – from Grace Vernarelli), and Keller (28:45 – unassisted) also scored in the second quarter giving the Maroons the 7-0 lead going into halftime.
• Carsyn Poppa scored the final goal of the game at 40:56 to provide for the Maroon's final margin of victory at 8-0.

BY THE NUMBERS

• Roanoke's defense held the Meredith to zero shots in the game. Over the past four games, the Maroons have only allowed six total shots, decreasing by one each contest since the 1-0 win over Wittenberg.
• On the other side, RC took 31 shots in the game including 21 in the first half. The Maroons also led in penalty corners 19-1.
• Madison Wingerter improved to 4-2 on the season in goal for the Maroons.

• Roanoke will return home on Saturday, September 24 when it hosts Sewanee in Kerr Stadium as part of Family Weekend activities. Game time with the Tigers is scheduled for 12 p.m.
