Roanoke Plays Two In Opening Day Of Tournament

The Lead: Roanoke College traveled to Ohio to compete in the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic volleyball tournament, hosted by the College of Wooster. The Maroons first opponent would be the Beavers of Bluffton University. Bluffton won a tightly contested first set before carrying that momentum to a 25-15, second set win. In the third, Roanoke held set point at 26-25, but three consecutive Beaver points would carry Bluffton to the 3-0 tournament opening win.

Highlights:

  • A Rylee Mayer kill tied the opening frame at 22-22. A pair of Bluffton points put the Maroons on the brink. Roanoke staved off one set point on a Ryanna Clark kill, but couldn't complete the comeback and fell down 0-1.
  • Bluffton raced out to a 10-3 advantage and cruised to a 25-15 win in the second set.
  • The third set would be tied 10 different times. A Parker Moody kill followed by a Logan Pasley service ace would give the Maroons a set point at 26-25. Following a timeout, the Beavers would record three straight kills to take the set, 28-26, and the match, 3-0.
  • Moody, Linsey Bailey, and Peyton Kirchner each registered seven kills. Kennedy Clemmer recorded a team high 19 digs with Olivia Newman assisting on 17 Roanoke points. Kirchner had one solo and four assisted blocks at the net.

The Lead: In their second match of the day, Roanoke faced off with their hosts from College of Wooster. Roanoke took the first set, but the Fighting Scots stormed back to take each of the next three sets to put the Maroons at 0-2 for the tournament.

Highlights:

  • Wooster led early but the Maroons would use a series of Wooster miscues and a Bailey kill to spark an 8-2 run to seize control of the first set. In the end, Roanoke stretched their advantage to double digits in taking the opener.
  • The Fighting Scots scored the first three, and 12 of the first 15 points of the second set to take the momentum and even the match at one set apiece, 25-13.
  • Three Wooster errors and a Newman kill gave the Maroons a 4-0 edge to start the third stanza. However, Wooster tied it at 14-14 and used an 11-2 run to close out the set.
  • Roanoke trailed by seven in the early stages of the fourth set but rallied to cut it to three. However, the Maroons could not complete the comeback and fell to the hosts, 3-1.
  • Bailey, Kirchner, and Moody each had eight kills with Newman handing out 19 helpers. Pasley recorded 12 digs with Clemmer and Newman adding 10.
