VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The #1 CNU Captains (13-1-1) scored the game-tying goal on Sunday evening in dramatic fashion when junior David Haas knocked home the equalizer as the buzzer sounded at Virginia Wesleyan. The teams would go scoreless in the overtime periods forced by Haas and would result in a 2-2 draw in non-conference action.

The Captains would take an early 1-0 lead on senior Clif Kipper's first goal of the season, assisted by CNU's leading scorer Winston Matthiesen. Kipper found the back of the net from about ten yards out with a shot to the right side.

The Marlins tied the game with just over 20 seconds remaining in the half, as Chase Ebel headed in a goal off an assist by Jared Windt. Just after halftime, the Marlins would pull ahead with a penalty kick goal in the 47th minute of action. Brian Cornell buried the PK to force CNU to play from behind for just the third time this season.

Christopher Newport turned up the heat in the attacking third, pouring 11 shots on the Virginia Wesleyan defense in the second half. Still, CNU was empty for nearly the entire half. As the offense continued to press, the Captains earned a corner kick  with about thirty seconds to go and sent everyone forward, including goalkeeper Justin Wolfe in an attempt to get the equalizer. CNU didn't score on the corner kick and looked to be out of it as the ten-second countdown was on, but Bonorden got to the ball and one put one last shot on frame for CNU and it found its way into the right side of the net.

In overtime, CNU would play a man down after a second yellow card was issued to Trevor Moyer, but still managed to hold onto the tie in dramatic fashion. The Captains improved to 13-1-1 with the draw, while Virginia Wesleyan is just the second team this season to score twice against CNU.

Junior Brian Lybert had six shots to lead the way for CNU, while Bonorden and Mattheisen each added three. Mattheisen's assist gives him six for the season, adding to his career-high.

Cornell led the way for Virginia Wesleyan with the goal on two shots, while Ricardo Brown added three shots for the Marlins.

The Captains travel to face Shenandoah University this Wednesday, October 20 at 7:00 pm in USA South action.
