GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team split their doubleheader at Guilford College on Wednesday winning game one 9-6 but falling in game two 12-4.

GAME 1: NCWC 9, GC 6

Junior pitcher/1B Beth Braswell got the Bishops off to a terrific start by crushing a three-run homer in the first inning of game one to get Wesleyan out to a 3-0 lead. Guilford, though, would rally taking a 4-3 lead into the 4th inning. However, the Bishops would not be denied scoring 3 runs in the 4th on sophomore Logan Winstead's RBI single and junior SS Meredith Mize's two-run double to take a 6-4 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.

Wesleyan then added 3 important runs over the 6th and 7th innings to stake themselves to a 9-4 lead. Mize first scored the 7th Bishop run on a GC error before junior 1B Bryona Knight's RBI single made it 8-4. Mize's sac fly in the 6th made it 9-4 Bishops before GC added 2 runs in the 7th off Braswell, but she closed them out for the win, her third of the season.

Braswell threw 7 innings allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Offensively, Wesleyan was led by the first four hitters in the lineup, who all combined for 8 hits as they went 8 for 15. NCWC had 5 players all record two-hit games in the win. They include outfielders Winstead and junior Nichole Mooney, who hit a triple, Mize (2 doubles), Knight, and Braswell while Braswell and Mize each drove in 3 runs apiece. Mize, Mooney, and Winstead all stole bases in the win as well.

GAME 2: GC 12, NCWC 4

Guilford got out to a 7-0 lead in game two off Bishop junior pitcher Grace Preston before Wesleyan rallied by scoring 4 runs over the 4th and 5th inning to get within three runs of GC at 7-4 after 5 innings.

But that would be as close as the Bishops could get as the Quakers scored 4 runs in the 6th to put the game out of reach. Preston threw 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 earned runs and 11 hits with 8 walks and a strikeout.

Wesleyan scored their runs on Chelsea Nixon's and Braswell's sacrifice flies, Mize's RBI double, and Mize then coming around to score the 4th run on a passed ball. Mize and Braswell each led with doubles while freshman DH Kayla Hawley knocked a triple.

The Lady Bishops go to 6-8 on the season while Guilford goes to 7-5.

Wesleyan will return home on Saturday to host Piedmont College at 1:00 PM in a DH.
