The Lead: The Roanoke College women's soccer team earned the #3 seed going into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Maroons played host to Randolph-Macon on Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinal round. RC had defeated the Yellow Jackets, 1-0, in Ashland on March 28th with an overtime goal. Roanoke scored off a free kick at the 31 minute mark and the defense would make that score hold up as the Maroons advanced with the win over Randolph-Macon.
Highlights:
- In the opening minutes of play, the two rivals would exchange shots on goal with each keeper recording a save.
- At the 31:36 mark of the first half, Roanoke was awarded a free kick with a penalty outside the box. Emma Woods sent a high shot over everyone that would just duck under the top crossbar for the only goal of the afternoon.
- Two minutes later Morgan O'Neill sent a shot just over the crossbar and neither team would record another first half shot.
- In the first 15 minutes of the second half, O'Neill got back-to-back shots but each were saved by RMC keeper Zoe Long.
- Neither team would get another good scoring chance as Roanoke would advance with the 1-0 win.
- Carrington Lippi picked up the win in goal, her seventh of the season, recording one save.
- The Maroons would enjoy a 15-7 overall shot edge including 6-1 in shots on goal.
Up next: The Maroons will travel to #2 seed Bridgewater on Friday thanks to the Eagles 2-0 win over Shenandoah. Match time is to be determined.
