Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Quakers Tame Monarchs

The Guilford College men's lacrosse team faced the Methodist University Monarchs. The Quakers picked up their first win of the season, 12-10.

Guilford (1-2) notched the first goal as Devin Morse scored off a pass from Nick Honkomp. Morse quickly followed with another goal just over a minute later.

Methodist (1-1) tallied its first goal of the game at the 8:49 mark of the first. 1:29 later, Morse netted his third of the game as Joseph Hirvonen picked up an assist. Justin Barry added a goal of his own to give the Quakers a four-goal lead. The Monarchs cut the deficit back to three (5-2) with just seven seconds left in the opening period.

To open the second, Methodist found the back of the net but Guilford had an answer as Andrew Burch added his name to the scoring list. The Monarchs cut the lead back to two (6-4) before Burch scored once again. However, this time it came while a man-up with a helper from Barry.

The visitors scored twice before the halftime horn sounded including one just five seconds left in the period. The Quakers led 7-6 at the break.

Honkomp scored the first goal of the second half just a minute into the third off a pass from Hirvonen. Methodist pulled the game within one with a goal at the 9:37 mark. Hirvonen scored a goal of his own before Honkomp added his second of the period. GC held a three-goal lead (10-7) going into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The Monarchs netted the first goal, while a man-down to make the score 10-8. Hirvonen expanded the lead back to three as Aimery Workman tallied an assist. Honkomp added another goal as GC led 12-8 with 7:05 remaining in the regulation.

Things began to get interesting as Methodist scored two goals in the final five minutes and looked to add more. Two penalties were called on the Quakers with 1:16 left as the Monarchs fired two shots but Ryan Reed saved one as the other was blocked.

Another penalty was called on GC with just 41 seconds on the clock. Methodist tried to get off a shot but were unable to do so and eventually turned over the ball. The Quakers held on for the two-goal victory.

Hirvonen led GC with five points (2G, 3A) while Burch and Honkomp each finished with four points. Reed made seven saves in the win.

Guilford welcomes William Peace on Wednesday, March 2 for a non-conference matchup. Start time is set for 5:00 p.m.
