Brown-Scherer's Pair Leads Hopkins Past Randolph-Macon

The Basics
• Score: #5 Johns Hopkins-3, Randolph-Macon-1
• Records: JHU (3-0) • RMC (2-1)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: Sophomore Maddie Brown-Scherer scored a pair of goals, just 27 seconds apart, to lead the fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 3-1 win over visiting Randolph-Macon Friday night.

How it Happened
• It took more than 24 minutes for the Blue Jays to get on the clock, but once they did, they struck twice in less than 30 seconds. Sophomore Abby Birk centered the ball, from near the right endline, into the Yellow Jackets' circle. Brown-Scherer redirected Birk's pass inside the left post with 5:58 to play in the second quarter.
• Just 27 seconds later, Birk and Brown-Scherer reconnected on an eerily similar play to double Hopkins' lead. On the restart off the first goal, Birk dribbled into the offensive end, and sent a long pass into the circle. Once again, Brown-Scherer was there to deflect the ball past RMC goalie Gatlin Snyder.
• Freshman Siena Urbanski pushed Hopkins' lead to three with 4:55 left in the third with her first career goal. Senior Katie McErlean hit a long ball into the middle of the circle, Urbanski took one touch to settle the ball and then chipped it over a charging Snyder.
• The Yellow Jackets broke up the Blue Jays' bid for a shutout with just 2:10 remaining in the game. Abby Sloan converted a penalty stroke to make it a 3-1 game.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 3-0 all-time against Randolph-Macon and has outscored the Yellow Jackets, 9-2 in the series.
• Head coach Jane Wells needs one win to tie current Blue Jay women's lacrosse coach Janine Tucker for third on the program's wins' list.
• McErlean is now tied for 19th in school history with 13 career assists.

Inside the Box Score
• Senior Jodie Baris played the first three quarters in the cage and was not forced to make a save. Sophomore Kaitlin Hall played in the fourth and made one save. Snyder finished with 11 saves in the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
• Hopkins outshot Randolph-Macon, 31-2, and had a 13-3 advantage in corners.
