Roanoke Goes 2-0 At Puerto Rico Basketball Classic

The Lead: After starting the game on a 12-2 surge, the Roanoke women held Illinois Tech to just 25 points on their way to going 2-0 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

How it Happened:

  • Renee Alquiza scored the game's first points. After a Scarlet Hawk score, Kristina Harrel started a 10-0 run by the Maroons to seize control of the matchup in the first five minutes of play.
  • With 2:10 on the clock, JaBryah Haverkamp scored to give RC their largest lead of the first quarter, 18-4, and would take an 11 point advantage into the second period.
  • Kayla Kinsler assisted on a Whitney Hopson hoop before scoring on the fast break to give Roanoke a 21 point lead that they would take into the half.
  • The RC defense would hold Illinois Tech to just 5-19 shooting from the field while dominating the glass, 21-10, on their way to a 20+ point lead.
  •  The second half would see Roanoke again begin to add to their lead. Allison Livengood and Haverkamp scored on back-to-back possessions to push the Roanoke lead to 45-16.
  • A Corinne McPadden layup would give RC their largest lead of the game, 33, with just two minutes left to play. After a couple of Scarlet Hawk hoops, Jayla Faison would score the final points of the 56-25 victory.
  • Roanoke would see 13 of their 16 players find the scoring column led by Molly Hassell with nine points. Hopson netted eight with Kinsler and Morgan Micallef adding six points apiece.
  • RC enjoyed a 51-30 edge on the glass, led by Alquiza with four.

Up next: The Maroons will host the 2019 Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic at the Cregger Center on December 29-30. Roanoke will open up play against Wooster at 5:00pm.
