Roanoke Runs Way To Sweep Of Knights

The Lead: For the second time this month, Roanoke hosted Southern Virginia for a pair of seven inning games. The Marons took both ends of the double header on March 3rd and looked for a repeat on Wednesday. The Maroons used six SVU miscues in the opener to post a 9-2 win. In the second game, RC would see five pitchers combine for the 3-0 shutout.

How it Happened:

  • The Knights would score first as they would leave the bases loaded after scoring two runs in the top of the first.
  • Mason Staz reached on the first of six SVU errors, stole second, advanced on a passed ball and made it 2-1 on a wild pitch.
  • Roanoke would score two runs on a hit and an error in the second to take the lead for good. Conner Butler singled, advanced on a fielder's choice and would score when Tyler De Meo hit a ball to right field that was dropped. De Meo swiped second while Cale Agee scored on the throw to second base.
  • A four-run bottom of the third was highlighted by a Butler triple that scored Jack Carpin and PK Cocolis.
  • Jeb Byerley came in relief to pitch four strong innings, giving up just two hits while striking out seven for the win.
  • Butler was 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

How it Happened:

  • In a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, Luke Estep singled to left center and stole second. Estep advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a Jonny Wall single to left.
  • Roanoke would add another run in the fourth when Butler was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Staz would then deliver a RBI single to right.
  • For the third consecutive inning, the Maroons would score a run. Wall tripled off the left centerfield wall and scored on a Carson McCusker infield single.
  • Will Turner got the start and went four innings yielding just three hits and registering six strikeouts. Brandon Hill, Anthony Sullivan, and Trey Parker combined for two innings of shutout ball before handing the ball to Kevin Ledford for his third save of the season.
  • Wall was 3-3 with an RBI and run scored while McCusker went 2-3.
  • RC stole 10 bases during the 14 innings of play.  

Up Next: Roanoke is scheduled to host Hampden-Sydney on Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) double header with the first game starting at noon.
