Roanoke Women’s Basketball Tops Emory & Henry, 72-62, Behind Strong Second Half

EMORY, Va. – The Roanoke College Women's Basketball Team (2-0) shot 55.6 percent in the second half on its way to a 72-62 non-conference win against Emory & Henry College (1-1) Sunday afternoon. It was the first of two matchups between the Wasps and Maroons for this season, who will meet on Thursday February 4 in Salem for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest.

How It Happened
- RC scored the first four points of the game but E&H responded with seven in a row to take a 7-4 lead. The two squads traded baskets for the remainder of the period with the Wasps leading, 17-16.
- The teams continued to match one another point-for-point in the second. Down two with 2:23 to go before the break, the Wasps reeled off six in a row to take a 29-25 advantage. The Maroons scored the final four of the frame to go into the half knotted at 29.
- Coming out of the intermission, Roanoke put the first six points on the board before Emory & Henry used an 8-2 run to knot the score at 37. Eight straight by the Maroons late in the period gave them a 49-41 lead as they took a 45-52 margin into the final 10 minutes of play.
- RC would not let E&H get any closer than five points the rest of the way as it notched a 14-6 run to lead by 70-57 with 2:24 to play. The Maroons were then able to cruise to the 72-62 final margin.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior guard Kylea Cooper (Hickory, N.C.) led all players with 20 points, adding three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Junior forward Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) posted her second double-double in as many days with 17 points and 10 boards while senior guard Josie Salyer (Mount Carmel, Tenn.) notched eight points, three rebounds and two steals.

Roanoke Individual Leaders
- Four different players scored in double figures for RC, led by Ayanna Scarborough with 14 points and five rebounds off the bench.
- Renee Alquiza had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks while Kayla Kingsler posted nine points and 10 rebounds.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry made just 17-of-58 (29.3%) of its field goals, but was able to convert six attempts from long range. The Wasps were a proficient 84.6% (22-of-24) at the line.
- Roanoke shot 44.9 percent (31-for-69) for the game as it hit 20-of-36 in the second half. The Maroons struggled at the line, however, making just 45.5 percent (5-of-11) of their free throws.
- Emory & Henry held a 44-41 rebounding advantage and a 14-11 lead on the offensive glass. The Maroons dominated the scoring inside, leading 40-22 on points in the paint.
