The Lead: The Roanoke College volleyball team traveled to Greensboro to face Guilford College on Wednesday night. The Maroons took the first set but found themselves down, 2-1, heading into the fourth. A Roanoke win would set up a fifth set, the second five-setter in their past three matches. The Maroons took a 6-0 lead before a Guilford rally gave the Quakers a 12-11 advantage. Four straight by RC gave Roanoke the 3-2 ODAC win.

Highlights:

  • With the score tied at 10-10, kills by Angel Ross and Linsey Bailey sparked a 7-1 run that lead to a first set victory, 25-15.
  • Set two was tied at 15-15 before a 4-0 run by the home team put Roanoke in a hole. The Maroons cut the deficit to two, 19-21, but could get no closer as Guilford tied the match at a set apiece.
  • The Quakers took three of the first four points and never trailed as they took a 2-1 advantage.
  • Guilford looked to put the match away with a 6-1 start to the fourth set. A pair of Bailey aces with kills by Ross and Peyton Kirchner allowed Roanoke to rally for the lead and they pulled away to even the match at 2-2.
  • The Maroons used three Quaker miscues to go with a Kirchner kill and a kill and service ace by Parker Moody to open the deciding frame with a 6-0 run. However, the home team responded to take 12 of the next 17 points to secure a 12-11 edge. Roanoke re-rallied with consecutive kills by Bailey, Ross and Moody to finish off the Roanoke comeback and take the, five-set, win at Guilford.
  • Bailey had 17 kills while Ross added 13 attack winners. Kylee Draper (14) was one of four Maroons with eight or more assists. Moody had two solo and three assisted blocks while Kennedy Clemmer had 15 digs, one of four RC players with double-digit digs.

Up next: The Maroons travel to Mary Baldwin tomorrow night for a non-conference match.
