VIRGINIA BEACH -- There was a little bit of the good, the bad, the pretty, and the ugly in a 67-63 victory posted by the No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins over the visiting Sea Gulls of Salisbury University on Monday at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. What was missing, for both teams, was consistency, as first-game errors kept either squad from getting into any kind of rhythm. But, Virginia Wesleyan (1-0) took the lead for good on a layup by rookie DJ Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) for a 25-23 advantage with 4:25 remaining to be played in the first half and never trailed again. Salisbury (0-1), bolstered by the addition of four transfer players, including David Pearman (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), a member of the University of Maryland team for the past three years, never let it get easy, however. Led by 6-foot-8, 230 pound senior center Chris McGrew, junior Mike Maczko (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) and junior Devin Posey (Indian Head, Md./Lackey), a transfer from the College of Southern Maryland, the Gulls stopped VWC scoring runs before they got out of hand. Virginia Wesleyan led 33-29 at halftime and pushed into a 42-31 lead in the first three minutes of the second, helped by a key triple by sophomoreChris Teasley (Newport News, Va./Menchville). Salisbury head coach Steve Holmes called for a timeout at that point and the Sea Gulls returned regrouped enough to cut the lead to four when Pearman nailed a triple. VWC played with a single-digit lead through most of the next six minutes, before Teasley connected on another triple with 9:13 on the clock to give the Marlins a 57-45 lead. A Salisbury turnover on the ensuing play led to a jumper by sophomore Tre' Ford (Falls Church, Va./J.E.B. Stuart) and the Marlins owned their largest lead of the game at 59-45. A Teasley layup with 6:28 remaining gave Virginia Wesleyan a 62-52 lead, but Salisbury chipped away at the spread, helped by timely triples from Maczko and Pearman. A McGrew jumper pulled the Gulls with a 66-62 score, before both teams started missing shots down the stretch. Salisbury was 0-for-5 in the final 2:00, while VWC took one shot and missed it. McGrew hit one of two free throws to pull the Sea Gulls within a 66-63 score with 23 seconds remaining, before Teasley answered for the Marlins at the other end of the court. Four Marlins scored in double-figures, led by Teasley with 16 points. He hit 6-of-8 field goal attempts, including a trio of triples. Woodmore opened his collegiate career with 12 points, junior Donald Vaughn (Woodbridge, Va./Dumfries Potomac) added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds, and sophomore Chris Astorga (Suffolk, Va./Virginia Beach Cape Henry) scored 10 points. McGrew led Salisbury with 19 points, hitting 9-of-14 field goals, all in the paint. Maczko added 11 points and shared high rebounding honors with McGrew, each with seven. Pearman scored eight points. Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 17, visiting Averett University for a 7 p.m. start.
