Volleyball Shakes Off Ferrum in 4 Sets; Sweeps Hollins 3-0

SALEM, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team shrugged off Ferrum College (Va.) in four sets (3-1) on Friday afternoon during their first match of the Roanoke Maroon Classic in Salem, Virginia.

Wesleyan edged the Panthers 25-22 in the first set behind 13 kills while holding Ferrum to seven. The Bishops then increased their match lead to two sets to none by putting down 15 kills en route to a 25-19 set win. Wesleyan only committed 4 errors in that set while hitting .379.

Ferrum (1-4) then came back to grab the third set 25-20 before the Lady Bishops got out to a 13-5 lead in the fourth set en route to the 25-19 win on 15 kills.

Wesleyan totaled 54 kills in the match led by a season-high of 17 from senior right side Sydney Barnwell. She committed only one attack error while hitting .552 with 3 aces (also a season-best) and 2 assisted blocks.

Senior middle Lauren Weaver also played well piling up 12 kills and hitting .258 with 3 total blocks. Senior outside hitter Michaela Seawell then was the third and final Bishop to finish with double-digit kills with 10 along with 7 digs, an ace, and a block.

Junior Libero Kira Kristjanson then had a season-high of 20 digs to go along with her 4 assists and an ace while sophomore setter Sloan Martin registered a season-best 48 assists to go along with her 12 digs and 4 kills for a double-double. Senior hitter Caitlin Leggett also tallied 7 kills while junior DS Aubrey Nicholson had 8 digs and 2 aces.

The NC Wesleyan Volleyball Team swept Hollins University (Va.) 3-0 in match two of Roanoke College's Maroon Classic Friday evening 25-14, 25-20, and 25-12. 

Senior middle hitter Lauren Weaver led the Bishops in kills with 15 kills on 27 attempts, a .444 for the match. She also tallied 3 blocks assists and 1 solo block. Sydney Barnwell earned 5 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace, and 1 block assist. Michaela Seawell earned 4 kills in the first set, hitting a .333 on the outside.

Freshmen outside hitters Josephine Bravo and Hannah Byrd entered in the second set. The pair earned 3 kills each, hitting a matching .250 for the match. Byrd also earned 2 block assists on defense, while Bravo contributed 3 digs and 2 aces. 

Setter Sloan Martin piled up 12 assists in one set, while senior Makayla Jordan contributed 6 assists upon entering the lineup. Jordan earned 2 kills of her own, hitting a .667. Junior Allison Wichrowski also tallied 10 assists and 2 aces in the last two sets. 

Libero Kira Kristjanson piled up 17 digs, lowering Hollins' team hitting percentage to a negative with the help of the blockers. Senior defensive specialist Marisa Corcoran contributed 3 digs, rounding out a team effort for the match. 

The Bishops, now an impressive 5-2, next face ODAC opponents Roanoke College at 10 AM and Randolph College at 2 PM on Saturday from Salem, VA in the second half of their weekend in the Maroon Classic.
