UMW Softball Splits Wednesday Twinbill with Eastern Mennonite

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Wednesday doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite University at the Battleground, falling in the opener, 2-1, before winning game two, 2-1, in eight innings. The Eagles move to 14-10 on the season.

In the first game, UMW scored a run in the first, as Shelby Presgrave walked, stole second, and scored on a double from Emma Schieda. The Eagles held a 1-0 lead until EMU scored two in the fourth, which would be the final margin.

Aminah Shakir led the offense with a single and double, while Shieda added her double. Caitlyn Burch took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings, with one walk and four strikeouts.

In game two, the well-pitched contest remained scoreless through seven innings. In the eighth, EMU's runner on second to start the frame scored on a fielder's choice, but the Eagles answered in the bottom of the eighth, as Grace Drury reached on a bunt single, and Samantha Stuart singled home pinch runner Rayna Lloyd. Drury scord on a fielder's choice to end the game, beating the throw home.

Drury and Stuart each had two hits to pace the attack, while Brigid Ward doubled. Stuart allowed one run on three hits in eight innings, walking none and striking out six batters for the win.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday, when the Eagles host top-ranked Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader in conference play.
