Quakers Pull Away from Hornets

The Guilford College men's basketball squared off against the University of Lynchburg Hornets. After trailing with six minutes left in regulation, the Quakers pulled away from the Hornets for the 71-59 victory.

Out of halftime, Guilford (15-5, 11-2) was in front 28-25. Lynchburg (13-9, 7-6) quickly tied the game on the first possession. The Quakers then out scored the Hornets 7-2 with four points from Jaylen Gore to jump ahead by five (35-30).

GC grew the advantage to seven before Lynchburg rattled off a 15-3 run that included three three-point makes to go ahead 47-42 at the 11:30 mark. The Quakers did not back down as it responded by scoring the next five points, jump started by a Liam Ward three.

Both squads traded threes before Tharon Suggs hit a jumper in the paint to push the Hornets ahead 52-50 with 6:12 left in regulation. Julius Burch evened the game on the ensuing possession followed by 10 of the next 12 points for Guilford to take an eight-point edge (62-54) with 2:14 on the clock.

Lynchburg tried the cut the deficit but the Quakers did not letup and went on to win by 12 points. Burch led GC with 17 points with four rebounds and going 7-8 from the free throw line.

The first half was a defensive struggle between both squads. Neither team held a lead larger than one possession until the 5:08 mark when the Hornets were in front, 19-14. 

Back-to-back threes by Gore and Ward gave Guilford a 22-21 lead. The Quakers held the edge as the halftime horn sounded, 28-25.

Ward finished the night with 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Tyler Dearman (13), Gore (12) and Jorden Davis (10) each had double-digit points.

The difference in the game was shooting from deep and at the line in the second half. The Quakers were 7-13 (53.9%) from three and 12-13 (92.3%) from the free throw line in the second half. The visitors were 5-13 (38.5%) from deep and 7-9 (77.8%) at the line.

Guilford welcomes Bridgewater to Jack Jensen Court on Saturday, February 12. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
