The Basics
Score: Roanoke 10 | Southern Virginia 1

Records: Maroons 1-2 | Knights 0-4
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Roanoke College field hockey team looked to get in the win column on Wednesday night when Southern Virginia made the trip south to Salem. The Maroons wasted little time as, just 1:30 into the game, a record setting goal got the scoring started. The Maroons would control the action throughout as they cruised to a 10-1 victory.

Highlights:

  • Just into the game, Emilee Wooten scored off a feed from Grace Vernarelli to start the scoring for the Maroons.
  • With that goal, Wooten passed Shelbi Holoman '16 to become the Roanoke College all-time leader in goals scored with 57. Last season in a win over Sweet Briar, Wooten became the all-time leader in total points and as the career leader in assists, the senior now holds every offensive record in school history.
  • Just 40 seconds later, Martha Hurley sent a ball toward the goal that was put in the back of the cage by Tess Taloumis. Wooten and Vernarelli teamed up at the 3:12 mark to make it 3-0 Maroons.
  • After a Knight score, Katherine Martin tipped in a ball from Claudia Roncone while Claire Eisenhart and Lindsey Keyes added unassisted goals to make it 6-1 after one period of play.
  • Caroline Diehl and Abby McCusker would make it 8-1 at the break.
  • The second half would see Roanoke possess the ball for much of the 30 minutes. Clare McCurley scored off a feed from Kaitlin Thompson and Saige Bullock wrapped up the scoring to make it a 10-1 final.

Up next: Roanoke will travel to Tennessee for a pair of games over the weekend. The Maroons will face Sewanee on Saturday at noon.
