Emory & Henry Baseball Splits With Washington and Lee On Senior Day Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (6-17, 5-17 ODAC) concluded the regular season on Saturday afternoon as it split its Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with Washington and Lee University (9-12, 9-12 ODAC). The Generals earned a 7-5 win in game one while the Wasps responded to grab a 6-5 come-from-behind win in the nightcap.

The twin-billing also served as Senior Day for the Wasps, who honored their nine seniors prior to the start of game one.

Game One – Washington and Lee 7, Emory & Henry 5
The Wasps opened up a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a single up the middle by senior first baseman Joe Tolone (Concord, N.C.). W&L made it a 2-1 contest through four and scored five in the sixth for a 7-1 advantage. Chapin Bassi drilled a three-run home run to right-centerfield to highlight the frame.

In the seventh, E&H got three runs back to close the gap to 7-4. Senior designated hitter Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.) knocked a two-run shot to center while sophomore catcher Nathan Treadway (Valdese, N.C.) plated a run on a fielder's choice.

Emory & Henry got within two after a wild pitch and throwing error by the Generals' catcher allowed senior third baseman Hayden Milley (Clover, S.C.) to score from second base. The Wasps would not get any closer as the W&L held on for the 7-5 win.

Mason Shuffler earned the win, scattering four runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. Derek Hughes was credited with the save, pitching the final two innings in one-hit fashion, allowing one unearned run. Senior Noah Griffin (Fort Mill, S.C.) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts over seven innings of work.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 7, Washington and Lee 6
Emory & Henry scored in the first for the second game in a row as Milley plated senior shortstop Caleb Haynes (Covington, Va.) with a single to center. The Generals got a pair of unearned runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Wasps saw Kezele draw a bases-loaded walk to tie things at 2-2 and went ahead, 4-2, as Treadway hit a two-run homer to left-center in the third.

A run in the fourth by W&L closed the gap to 4-3 setting up a two-run double by Zach Perkins in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Jackson Gazin in the seventh for a 6-4 Generals' lead.

Emory & Henry completed the come-from-behind win in the eighth as Milley cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center, 7-6.

Senior Jordan Smith (Bassett, Va.) earned the win in relief, pitching the final three innings as he allowed no runs on one hit. Matt Whitely suffered the loss, as he allowed three runs on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in four innings of work.
