Big Win Over Bluefield Leaves EMU Men 8-1 Going Into Break

The Eastern Mennonite men's basketball team wanted to head into the Christmas break on a positive note and they got their Christmas wish Sunday afternoon. Playing on the second day of the 24th annual Don Glick Classic at Bridgewater College, the Runnin Royals dominated NAIA Bluefield in a 103-68 win.

EMU forced four turnovers in the first two minutes and skipped to a 7-0 lead against the Rams.

The men quickly pushed the lead to double figures and led by as many as 20 in the first frame. At halftime, the Royals led 53-38, buoyed by a 25-for-29 performance at the free throw line.

With the edge at 61-45 a few minutes into the second, Eastern Mennonite landed the knockout punch. Over a frame of six and a half minutes, the men outscored Bluefield 22-1 and pushed the lead to 83-46 after an offensive rebound and two free throws from Eli Crawford (Staunton, Va./R.E. Lee).

The lead stayed in the 30s for the final 11:33 as the Runnin Royals strolled to the big win.

A day after tying the school record for free throw attempts at 49, EMU finished 34-39 from the stripe for 87%. Of the 11 men to play 11 or more minutes, 10 of them made at least one free throw. The Royals attempted 88 free throws in their two games at the Classic.

Eastern Mennonite also shot a blistering 57% from the floor, hitting 32 of 56 field goal attempts. The Rams shot just 38%. EMU had a 39-35 edge in rebounds.

George Johnson (Richmond, Va./Miller School) led five men in double figures with 18 points. Crawford finished with 13 points and and game high nine rebounds.

Freshman Adam Burroughs (Roanoke, Va./Northside) put in a career high 13, including nine in the first half. Todd Phillips (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) came off the bench in the game and was the third Royal to score 13.

Owen Longacre (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) added 11.

The win pushes No. 8 Eastern Mennonite to 8-1 to close the first half of the season. The Runnin Royals now have a 22-day wait before their next game when they host Ferrum on Monday, Jan. 3.
