Location: Farmville, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke played their arch rivals from Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons had defeated the Tigers back on January 22nd, 70-64, and went looking for the season sweep in Farmville. Hampden-Sydney built an 11-point first half advantage and took a 31-24 lead into the locker room. Roanoke would respond in the second half and took a 6-point edge into the final five-minutes of play. However, the Tigers closed the game on a 16-4 run to take the rematch, 70-64.

How it Happened:

  • After Hampden-Sydney hit a game opening three, Tripp Greene answered and the game was tied. Trailing by five, a Nick Price triple would make it a 12-10 score with 13-minutes left in the first half.
  • With 4:16 left in the half, the Tigers had built an 11-point advantage, their largest of the afternoon. Zach Rosenthal connected from long range and a Joshua Morse layup would see the Maroons get back in the game, 31-23. A Kasey Draper free throw would inch the Maroons closer but HSC led, 31-24, at the break.
  • Draper scored the first five Roanoke points of the second half but Sydney would still hold the lead, 36-29. With 13:10 left on the clock, the Tigers would still enjoy a seven-point spread, but Roanoke would begin to mount a rally over the next five-minutes.
  • A Rosenthal three was followed by a Draper hoop and when Justin Kuthan hit from beyond the arc, Roanoke was within a single point, 46-45. Kuthan and fellow post Ethan Rohan scored from close range and the Maroons had completed the rally and took a 49-48 lead with just under nine-minutes left to play.
  • Efosa U-Edosomwan scored and then Draper had a 5-0 run to give the visitors a six-point edge, 60-54, with 4:45 left to play. However, Hampden-Sydney held the Maroons to just four more points as the Tigers closed the game on a 16-4 run to exact a bit of revenge and pick up the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win, 70-64.
  • Draper led Roanoke with 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Rosenthal (12) and Kuthan (10) would account for 22 of RC's 28 bench points.

Up next: Roanoke will play their regular season home ODAC finale on Wednesday when they host Guilford at 7pm in the Cregger Center.
