UMW Softball Splits Thursday Doubleheader with Randolph

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Thursday evening doubleheader at the Battleground, as the Eagles took the opener, 6-3, and fell in game two, 9-6. UMW moves to 14-11 on the season.

In the opener, after a first inning that featured Randolph scoring a run despite UMW pitcher Caitlyn Burch striking our four batters in the inning, the Eagles took the lead with a pair of runs in their half. Emma Dickson and Hannah Steele singled, and both scored on a double from shortstop Caroline Bird

UMW added two in the second, as Nya Lloyd walked and Kayla Mann singled, and Lloyd moved to third on a line out. Steele added a bunt single to score one run, and Maggie Mrowka followed with another RBI single. The Eagles scored one in the third, as Brigid Ward scored Lloyd with a single.

After Randolph scored in the fourth, UMW gained a run back in the fifth. Nya Lloyd doubled to lead off, moved to third on a strikeout, and scored on a bunt single form here sister, Rayna Lloyd

Dickson led the Eagles' 14 hit attack with three hits, while Nya Lloyd doubled twice and scored three runs. Steele, Mrowka, and Bird also had a pair of hits apiece. Caitlyn Burch gained her 10th win of the season, allowing one earned run on six hits in seven innings, with 11 strikeouts.

In game two, UMW scored six runs in the first inning, on a pair of three-run homers, from Mrowka and Emma Schieda. Randolph scored three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to pull ahead.

Schieda was 2-3 with the home run and single, while Mrowka homered, Bird doubled, and Steele tripled. UMW starter Stephanie Folkner allowed three runs in four innings on seven hits, walking one and striking ot three, but didn't gain a decision.

The Eagles will host Gettysburg College on Saturday at noon for another doubleheader.
