Bishops Win in the Battle of the Wesleyans

Rocky Mount, NC – The North CarolinaWesleyan University Women's Basketball team hosted the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan in their own Everett Gymnasium. The Battling Bishops defeated the Marlins by a score of 72 to 54 in the Battle of the Wesleyans.

The first quarter saw the Bishops ahead of the Marlins, while shooting 54% from the floor and causing a total of 4 steals. 

Early in the second quarter the Marlins took a 1-point lead over the Battling Bishops; however the Marlins lacked the ability to do so again for the remainder of the game. The Bishops would shoot 62% from the floor and 60% from behind the arc to take a 42 to 32 lead going into the half.

The third quarter saw the Bishops only shoot 35% from the floor. The Marlins cut their lead to 6 points in the middle of the third quarter only to see the lead extend to a 10 point deficit by the end of the third. 

The Bishops would go on a 10 to 0 run to put the game awayin the fourth quarter defeating the Marlins 72 to 54.

The Battling Bishops had three players to score in double digits versus the Marlins. Nadia Simmons, the junior from Henderson, NC, led the Bishops in scoring with a 15 point night shooting 6 of 9 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Simmons also contributed 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals for the Bishops. Ariena Harris, the junior from Raleigh, NC, scored 10 points with a 3 of 9 shooting performance from the floor, while being 2 of 5 from behind the arc and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. Kayrisma Harrison, the senior from Weldon, NC, had a 10 point night while shooting 4 of 9 from the floor and 2 of 3 from the free throw line. Harrison also contributed 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks in her defensive game for the win against the Marlins.

The Lady Bishops will travel to Lynchburg, VA, to face the Lynchburg Hornets this Saturday to close out 2022 and get ready for the New Year.
