Four Reach Double Figures as UMW Women's Basketball Tops Lynchburg, 85-53

Junior forward Jordan Carpenter scored 16 points, making all five of her field goals and all six of her free throws, to lead four Eagles in double figures as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated the University of Lynchburg, 85-53, on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg. The Eagles improve to 17-3 on the season.

The Eagles jumped ahead with an 8-1 run to start the first quarter, with four points from Carpenter, and five straight points from junior Keagan Schwab stemmed a Hornet run to give UMW a 13-6 advantage with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles gained scores from Lexi Miller, Sydney Sherman, and a three pointer from Elizabeth Dufrane build the lead to 24-12 after 10 minutes.

In the second, UMW continued to produce offensively and defensively. The Eagles started the second with a 10-3 run, with Carpenter adding two baskets, and the lead swelled to 34-15 with 5:17 left before halftime. A Miller layup with 1:27 to go gave UMW a 42-21 lead, a Dufrane followed with another three, and UMW held a 45-23 lead at intermission.

The lead remained throughout the third quarter. A Molly Sharman score with 1:08 left lifted the Eagles' margin to 30, at 59-29, and UMW led, 64-31, after three quarters. Lynchburg opened the fourth on a 9-2 run, but the Eagles answered with a 10-4 run of their own, capped by a pair of baskets from Sherman. Ashley Martin helped keep the margin in tact with a pair of baskets, and Rileigh Weaver, Grace Hare, and Sharman added points down the stretch.

In addition to her perfect shooting performance, Carpenter grabbed six rebounds. Dufrane scored 15 on 4-7 shooting from the field (3-6 from distance), and made all four of her free throws. Sherman made 5-6 shots for 12 points, and Schwab added 11.

The Eagles hot a red-hot 56.1% from the floor (32-57), making 4-14 three point attempts and 17-18 free throws. Lynchburg shot 35.3% (18-51), making 8-22 three point shots and 9-14 free throws. UMW led in rebounds, 33-26, and forced 24 turnovers.

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday as they face C2C foe UC Santa Cruz at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., at noon.
