Hawks take advantage of 10-run sixth inning against Lynchburg

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  – The Huntingdon baseball team opened the Five Points Deli Tournament with a 16-6 win over Lynchburg on Saturday night in a game shortened to eight innings.

Leading by a run, Huntingdon blew the game open with 10 runs in the sixth inning before scoring two final runs in the eighth inning to end the game.

The Hawks turned in a dominant performance on the mound and at the plate. Senior Carden Mellown earned his second win in as many starts and combined with relievers John Crawford and Tucker Duke for 17 strikeouts.

Mellown finished with 12 strikeouts, walked four, scattered three hits and gave up three runs in six innings of work. Crawford struck out two, walked one and allowed three hits and three runs in one inning and Duke struck out three and allowed one hit in one inning.

Tri Overby led the offense with a 6-for-6 performance, an RBI and three runs. Bradley Harris was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs and Wes Powell was 2-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs. Andrew Knight had two hits, three RBIs and two runs and Colton Clark had two hits, two RBIs, a run and a double.

Jake Elrod drove in two runs and scored twice and Chris Fisher and Hall Billings each scored one run.

Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Harris scored the Hawks' first run of the inning before a two-run single by Knight made it 7-3. Overby and Knight both scored on passed balls before RBIs by Powell and Harris brought in two more runs. A two-run double by Clark made it 13-3 before a bunt by Overby scored Powell to make it an 11-run game.

Overby and Powell scored the Hawks' final two runs in the eighth inning.

Coming Up: The Five Points Deli Tournament will conclude on Sunday with three games. Emory and Lynchburg will open the day at 11 a.m., followed by Huntingdon vs. Emory and Huntingdon vs. Millsaps.
