UMW Baseball Drops Season-Opening Twinbill to #35 Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped its season-opening to 35th ranked Shenandoah University on Wednesday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles dropped the opener, 7-0, before falling, 16-2, in the nightcap.

In game one, Shenandoah broke open a scoreless game in the third inning with three runs, and added another in the fourth. The Hornets added three in the seventh for the 7-0 shutout.

Sophomore catcher Andrew Gearhart led the Eagles with a pair of singles, while senior outfielder Norman Holcomb doubled. Sophomore DH Canon Davies provided the Eagles' other hit with a single.

Sophomore Zach Adams took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Ty Lowe pitched two innings of hitless relief with three strikeouts. 

The second game saw the Hornets score a pair in the second to grab the lead. The Eagles responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, as sophomore Jonathan Sedmak led off with a single to center, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored on a single by freshman Owen Reilly.

Shenandoah plated five runs in the third, and the Eagles got one back in the bottom of the inning. Holcomb singled with one out, stole second, and scored on a Sedmak single. The Hornets broke the game open late, with three runs in the sixth and six in the seventh.

Sedmak's two hits led the offense, while Nick Ciuffreda added a pinch-hit double. Freshman Alex Kyte took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, with one walk and two strikeouts. Freshman Ryan Dudak pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit and a walk, while striking out two batters.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Washington College for an 11:30 AM doubleheader.
