Eastern Mennonite Men’s Basketball Holds Off Emory & Henry, 75-73, Sunday In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University Men's Basketball Team (1-1, 1-1 ODAC) was able to hold off a hard-charging Emory & Henry College (0-7, 0-7 ODAC) to earn a 75-73 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win Sunday afternoon.

E&H honored senior guard Robert Holliday, Jr. (Kansas City, Kan.) prior to the game in his final regular season home game.

How It Happened
- The two squads went back and forth early in the game for a 9-8 Emory & Henry lead. The Wasps scored six in a row to go up, 15-8, with 13:57 left in the first. EMU closed the gap to one, 21-20, with 8:21 left on the clock. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half with E&H carrying a 38-37 advantage into the locker room.
- Coming out of the break, the Wasps and Royals continued to go basket-for-basket to a 48-48 tie with 13:58 left to play. Eastern Mennonite then went on a 9-2 run to go ahead 57-50, and extended its advantage to 11 (64-53) with 7:58 on the clock.
- Down by 10 with 5:30 to go, the Wasps scored eight in a row to get within two, 68-66. EMU made it a two possession game but E&H made seven of eight free throws in the final 2:37 to tie the game, 73-all with 37 seconds left.
- Eastern Mennonite hit a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to lead 75-73, setting up Emory & Henry with a final possession. Holliday, Jr. got a look for a three-pointer from the top of the key but his shot caromed off the iron as the Royals claimed the two-point victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Holliday, Jr. led all players with 24 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double while junior guard Micah Banks (Simpsonville, S.C.) had 21 points, four boards and two steals.
- Sophomore guard Kevin Grau Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla.) put up 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench.

Eastern Mennonite Individual Leaders
- D.J. Hill posted a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds while Tim Jones added 15 points, seven boards and six assists.
- Chris Simmons contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists as Kobi Alexander went for 10 points and seven boards.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 32.9 percent (23-for-70) for the game, hitting five three-pointers. The Wasps went 22-for-28 (78.6%) from the free throw line.
- Eastern Mennonite made 27-of-59 (45.8%) of its shots from the floor including five from long range. The Royals hit 72.7 percent (16-of-22) of their free throws.
- EMU held a 48-40 rebounding advantage and outscored E&H, 40-30, on points in the paint.
- The Wasps made the most of 17 Royal miscues, scoring 22 points off turnovers. Emory & Henry only committed five turnovers in the game.
