UMW Men Fall at Hampden-Sydney, 84-71 on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped an 84-71 decision at Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday. The Eagles slip to 9-3 on the season, and see their eight-game win streak snapped.

Hampden-Sydney jumped on top early, scoring the first eight points of the game. After a three pointer, the Tigers led, 11-2, but UMW immediately responded with nine straight points to tie the score. Baskets from Emmanuel Aghayere, Zack Blue, and Ra'Shawn Cook preceded a three pointer from Anias Saunders.

After the teams traded three point baskets, HSC went on a 9-0 run. Da'Shawn Cook and Ra'Shawn Cook each scored baskets before another Saunders three cut UMW's deficit back to four, at 25-21, with 10:08 remaining. A Saunders three pointer with 3:56 left in the half gave the Eagles their first lead of the day, at 33-31. The Tigers would score the next five points, and carried a 38-35 advantage to halftime.

The host Tigers started the second half with another 9-0 run, and the Eagles were unable to respond with a countering run, coming as close as eight points in the second half.

Ra'Shawn Cook led the Eagles with 21 points and four assists, while Da'Shawn Cook added 17 and Saunders 16, with four assists. Blue led the Eagles with seven rebounds.

The Eagles shot 36.2% from the field (21-58), making 9-36 three point attempts and 20-25 free throws. Hampden-Sydney shot 47% (31-66), making 4-21 three pointers and 18-20 free throws.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they face Ferrum College in Hampden-Sydney at 4:00 p.m.
