Agurkis Scores in Setback

Claire Leithauser, Wooster field hockey WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior Lucy Agurkis scored for the first time this year, and The College of Wooster field hockey team outshot visiting Bridgewater College (Virginia) on Friday evening at John P. Papp Stadium. However, the Fighting Scots were unable to overcome two first-period goals, and the Eagles went on to win 3-1.

Wooster (2-5) was pressuring Bridgewater (3-3) throughout the third period, and finally broke through when Agurkis ripped a shot into the cage from just inside the circle following a penalty corner insertion from junior Delaney Gross. The goal was Agurkis' second of her career, and capped a stretch of seven Wooster shots in a span of 2:39. First-year Mary Johnson nearly cracked the Eagles' defense, but Harley Hoffman was up to the test in the 40th minute. Hoffman turned aside four Wooster shots prior to Agurkis' goal.

An unlucky break resulted in Bridgewater's first goal of the night. Carynn Klingler poked a ball around a Wooster defender in the eighth minute, then got off a shot that deflected in. Just over four minutes later, Meredyth Rankin directed in a cross from Bekah Mercer to the post, and post play again resulted in the Eagles' third goal of the night, this time with Mercer redirecting a feed in the 48th minute.

Wooster first-year Cate Barkdoll, who finished with four saves, broke up a near-fully-developed 1-on-goalkeeper chance in the third period by stepping in front of an Eagle forward on the breakaway to knock away the lead pass.

Wooster led 12-10 on shots and allowed just three after halftime. The Scots earned five penalty corners to the Eagles' four.

Wooster has a quick turnaround with Transylvania University (3-3) making the trip up from Kentucky for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, September 24.
