The Alfred State Pioneers finished their opening weekend in Ferrum with an 11-10 loss to the Panthers. After gaining an early 10-3 lead thanks to a few homeruns, the Panthers mounted a comeback late in the game to steal the victory.
Right out of the gates, the Pioneer bats picked up right where they left off. Nick Serce hit a two-run homer to left-center to open the scoring. Tim Holler followed with a bomb of his own in his first at-bat as a Pioneer in over a year. Holler's return to the Pioneers continued with another homerun that brought in two runs in the 4th inning. Holler finished his day 3-6 with 2 HR, 3 RBI and a triple.
Some other standouts for the Pioneers include:
Bryson Rigsby: Rigsby went 3-4 with 3 RBI's and a walk in the leadoff spot for the Pioneers.
Spencer Riehler: Riehler started the game on the bump for the Pioneers and went 5 strong innings, allowing 1 earned run and striking out 4.
The Pioneers head to Durham, NC on Friday, February 24, and begin their weekend with a Friday night game against Elmira. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
