The Lead: After going to Radford for an exhibition match with the Highlanders last week, the Roanoke women's soccer team went on the road to face Ferrum College in their season, and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener. The Maroons scored early in the second half to take the lead.  However, the Panthers would net the equalizer with just over 10 minutes left to play to force overtime. Despite out-shooting their hosts in the two extra frames, 3-0, Roanoke could not net the game winner and the match ended in a draw.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke seized control early but a Mia Clary shot was saved in the opening minute of play.
  • The Maroons would continue to put shots on the Ferrum keeper. MC Petrucelli and Tessa Walsh were each turned away by Abbey Hayes as Roanoke would start to mount a sizable, first half, shot advantage.
  •  In total, Roanoke would take 10 shots with eight being on target in a first half that would see the Maroons enjoy a 10-2 edge in shots. However, eight saves by Hayes helped the Panthers keep the game a scoreless tie.
  • A minute and a half into the second period, the Roanoke attack finally broke through as Morgan O'Neill gave the Maroons a 1-0 lead.
  • The Roanoke defense seemed poised to see the 1-0 lead hold up entering the stages of the second half. But with just over 10 minutes on the clock, Brady Hentz scored to tie the game on just Ferrum's third shot of the afternoon.
  • RC would get three shots in the two overtime periods but none were on the mark and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
  • Ellie Schad recorded five of the Maroons 22 total shots. O'Neill, Walsh, and Petrucelli each put two shots on goal. Keeper Hannah Shay went all 110 minutes, registering one save.

Up next: Roanoke will travel to Virginia Beach next Sunday for a 2:00pm match with the Marlins.
