The Lead: Roanoke hosted Virginia Wesleyan in their final Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) regular season match. The Maroons came into the matchup with the Marlins with seeding for the upcoming ODAC Tournament on the line. RC won the first set, but the Marlins rallied to take the next three sets and the match, 3-1.

How it Happened:

First Set:

  • As would be the case for most of the night, the first set would go back and forth throughout.
  • Roanoke took a 7-2 advantage before the Marlins answered with a 7-2 run of their own and the set was tied at 9-9.
  • The first frame was knotted at 19-19 when a Linsey Bailey kill would start a late RC run. After an attack error, Parker Moody recorded a kill with an Angel Ross kill putting the  Maroons on the brink of a 1-0 lead. Moody would finish off a 6-1 run to close out the first set, 25-21.

Second Set:

  • Roanoke found themselves down, 11-6 before a rally would tie the set at 11-11  after a kill by Olivia Newman that proceeded a pair of Virginia Wesleyan miscues. A pair of Moody service aces would tie the score.
  • From that point on, a two-point edge would be the largest that either team would enjoy.
  • The Maroons took a 23-22 advantage, but VWU would score the final three points of the set to tie the match at 1-1.

Third Set:

  • Neither team would lead by more than three points during a third set that would see 12 ties and seven lead changes.
  • Another Bailey kill would give Roanoke a one-point lead, 25-24, however, the visitors would once again score the final three points of the set for a 2-1 lead.

Fourth Set:

  • Virginia Wesleyan would score first and build an eight point lead.
  • Two Marlin errors and two more Bailey kills would trim the deficit to four, 17-21.
  • Roanoke would get no closer as the Marlins closed out the match on a 4-1 run.

Highlights:

  • Bailey recorded 20 kills and eclipsed the 1,000 kill mark for her career. Moody and Ryanna Clark each added nine kills with Ross finishing with five.
  • Newman had 36 assists with Kennedy Clemmer registering 32 digs.
  • Logan Pasley served six aces and Clark had one solo and three assisted blocks.
